Technical information
For output, it doesn’t really matter what software and hardware I use, since PostScript and PDF files are independent of the programs that create them. However, the files that you receive from authors will come in a wide variety of formats, so the first thing you need to know is whether or not I can handle the files you send me.
Here are details of my hardware and software.
Data security
I take regular and frequent backups of all data, storing them on CDs, Zip disks, a separate internal hard disk and a second networked computer. This protects all work from accidental loss. For any given job, there is never more than a day’s work at risk of loss. I carry a full backup with me when I am away from work as protection against the loss of my equipment.
I run continual background antivirus checks and scan my complete system daily for viruses. No virus has ever infected my computers. I also use a hardware firewall to protect against unauthorised intrusion via the Internet.
Other security measures include regular scans for spyware, trojans and worms; avoidance of software (such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express) known to have security weaknesses; and routine updating of Windows via Windows Update to ensure maximum safety.
Internet connection
I have broadband cable modem access to the Internet at 3 Mbps. Receipt and delivery of large files via email or FTP is therefore straightforward. I also maintain a dial-up connection as protection against failure of the cable connection.
